Fundamentals of fire instruction is a self‑paced 4‑month online course for fire instructors, officers and crew leaders who want to train and develop firefighters more deliberately and effectively.

The course shows how firefighting skill is built through structured, intentional training rather than experience alone.

It explains how instructors can use Self‑Determination Theory, recognition‑primed decision making and behavioral learning principles in real‑world firefighter training, with tight group dynamics, fear of failure, limited training time and a culture where standing out feels risky.

What the course is about

This course is about how to train firefighters well, not what to train, but how to think about it as an instructor.

Why experience alone does not build reliable firefighting skill and what structured training must do instead.

How recognition primed decision making works and why correct behavior must be established from the first repetition.

What actually motivates firefighters to train and how instructor behavior affects meaning, mastery, autonomy and relatedness.

This is not a generic instructor course. It is built entirely around the real culture and real constraints of training firefighters, and it does not pretend those constraints do not exist.

Course format and structure

Video release: one new pre-recorded lesson per week, for a total of around 16 lessons

Lesson length: between 5 and 40 minutes per lesson, depending on the topic

On-demand access: participants can watch lessons whenever it suits them and rewatch as needed

Access period: full access during the course and for an additional 3 months after the course ends

Language: all course content is delivered in English with English subtitles. Other subtitle languages may be added on request

Course conditions

Price: 229 EUR incl VAT per participant for the full course, covering all video lessons, any downloadable materials and a digital certificate of completion

Payment: payment is made in advance. A place is confirmed only after payment has been received. Organisations that prefer invoice payment can arrange this in advance

Delivery: The course is delivered entirely online through pre-recorded video lessons released weekly

Refunds: cancellations before the stated deadline will be refunded minus any transaction fees. After that deadline, or once access has been granted, the fee is normally non-refundable. If the course is cancelled by the organiser, all fees are refunded in full

Certificate: participants who complete the course receive a digital certificate of completion
