Karel works as a major for the Brussels fire service. This is a rank comparable to division chief in the US.
He serves as citywide tour commander and as chief of the training department.
He also serves as a volunteer sergeant in Oostkamp, the place where he lives. Besides this, he is active in training and teaching.
